GOT CRABS????

Blue Crab are sometimes referred to as the roaches of the sea, they scavenge along the ocean floor feeding on live and dead sea life.

Hard to believe when you see the pure white meat and partake of the sweet flavor they have.  I have been a fan of Blue Crab ever since I can remember.  We lived in Houston and when my mom would get a hankering for seafood, much to my dads chagrin we would wake up when it was still dark, pack up the car and head to Morgans Point. Yes, I know Morgans Point is now teaming with tankers to be unloaded, however when I was young it was nothing more that a rickety old pier that we would crab off of.

Armed with Chicken necks, weights and string  we would tie our bait on with a weight or two and toss it in the water.

No crab nets we did it the hard way.  We would wait a bit then slowly, ever so slowly we would bring the string up straining to see if a crab was on the other end.  Being ever so careful to not take it out of the water and whispering in a hushed but excited tone, ‘Get the NET!’ and someone would come running over with a pole net to scoop under the crab and bring it up to the surface.   VidB432-

We would all gather around and admire our newest catch seeing who had bragging rights on the biggest crab caught that day.  By noon the crabs would have retreated and we would gather up all our tackle, making a stop in Seabrook to purchase shrimp straight from the shrimping boats. Then back home to prepare for our Seafood feast.

This was not something we got to do very often maybe once or twice a Summer, but my brother and I did look forward to i. And best of all was the Seafood Feast that followed.

Upon our return home.  The whole family would pitch in cleaning the shrimp and crab getting all ready for a seafood boil.  Once boiled, my mom would put it all in a huge bowl and chill it in the fridge while we took showers and cleaned up.

Then We Feasted.  And did we ever feast.  Those were the best and most loved meals for me when I was young.

When I got married my husband had never been crabbing, but he took to it quickly.  Morgans Point was no longer a viable destination to crab, so we went to Bacliff to the spillway fishing pier.  We would take my mom, my father at this point would stay home, Im sure glad that he no longer had to go on these crabbing outings.

Alas the Bacliff spillway is no longer open for Crabbing or fishing.  In fact the pier is gone altogether.  My mom is also no longer with us.  I’m sure she would have loved it had she lived long enough to learn my husband and I moved to Kemah TX. and we now live in the heart of the Seafood district.  All the Shrimp, Crab and fish are a stones throw away from me at the Seafood shops in Seabrook just over the bridge.  I can practically see them from my office window.

So although we don’t go crabbing, with the exception of the occasional crab that latches onto my fishing line. It is a blessing that we have this valuable asset of all the fresh seafood our hearts desire at our fingertips at the Seabrook Seafood District. Special shout out to Baybrook Seafood.

We no longer boil the crabs we now have a method of steaming them that we like to do and we have added to the menu a lemon butter sauce that the family can not live without at any seafood meal.

Anyway my daughter and I had fun making this video of how to Kill, Clean and Cook Crabs.  I hope you enjoy.
